How to best prepare for you Cake Smash Session
As your baby fast approaches one-year-old, this is the most ideal way to capture their next portrait. What better way to celebrate turning ONE than smashing up and eating a cake? This is a fun milestone to capture that you can bring out at their 21st!
A little practice never hurt
Some babies are overwhelmed when they are suddenly placed in the spotlight and being cheered on by multiple adults to dig into a big cake. You can get them used to the idea by giving them a small cupcake at home to practice on.
Don’t assume bubs will dive in
Some babies will dive straight in and continue to eat until we take the cake away from them all crumbled up, however others may not. Some babies may take a little while to get use to the idea of smashing up a cake and some little ones may even end up in tears. Please don’t be upset or disappointed if this happens. We will still be able to capture some gorgeous photos – we may need to help out a little by breaking up the cake, we can give bubs a wooden spoon, we can even place some icing on baby’s face, arms and feet. Sometimes the photos where they are poking at the cake or looking at it thinking ‘you want me to do what?’ are just as cute.
A big mess
Please bring a change of clothes for all those attending the session. We recommend that mum and dad wear something that they don’t mind getting some cake on. Sometimes babies get a little overwhelmed and need a cuddle or some encouragement from mum and dad and you too could end up covered in cake. We also suggest brining a long a plastic bag to put any messy clothes in. Bubs will get a warm bubble bath at the end of your session to clean up.
Siblings
If you’re bringing other children along, it would be best to bring someone with you who can watch them, so that there aren’t any distractions. Siblings are welcome to join in to part of the session but we ask you discuss this with us prior to your session.
What to bring a long
Please bring a long a water bottle and some snacks for bubs, eating cake can make them very thirsty. Also a change of clothes for bubs and even yourself, a towel, a face cloth and a plastic bag, as cake most always ends up everywhere. And of course any props, outfits or decorations that we have previously discussed.
During your session
We ask that you please sit and watch your child's cake smash session and help out when needed. It is best if we are able to get bubs settled and looking directly at the camera ourselves, as this makes for better photographs. If your child needs a little encouragement we may ask you to help to get their attention or to help with some silly dancing or singing to get those big smiles. If your little one is on the move we may also need you to help pop them back into place and therefore suggest you wear clothes you can easily move in. We will let you know when your assistance is needed throughout the session as this will allow us to get the best images possible.
We look forward to your session and cant wait to smash some cake with your and your little one.
